Extracted from the peels of the fruit of the orange plant or Citrus sinensis, orange oil or sweet orange oil is one of the most widely used essential oils in herbal medicine and aromatherapy. Read on to learn how to use orange oil for skincare, haircare, immunity building, and home care.
Sweet orange is native to China, and it has several therapeutic properties including antidepressant, anti-inflammatory, sedative, diuretic, antiseptic, antimicrobial, antibacterial, aphrodisiac, and antispasmodic properties. These numerous properties make it useful for a number of applications in any household.
One of the best ways to receive the therapeutic benefits of orange essential oil is to use it in an essential oil diffuser or vaporizer. Pour 5-6 drops of orange oil into the diffuser on low heat and disperse the sweet, but powerful, fragrance into the air around your house or at work.
Use this method to uplift mood or to reduce physical and mental fatigue. Diffusing the oil also helps in sleeping through the night when used before going to bed.
Alternatively, you can blend 5 drops each of sweet orange and lavender oils, and add this blend in a diffuser.
Fill a glass spray bottle of around 100 ml size with water and add 5 drops of orange essential oil to it. Shake the bottle well and spray around the house. This works as a natural room freshener.
Alternatively, add 20 drops of a mixture of orange, grapefruit, and lemon essential oils in 2 ounces of water in a spray bottle and use it as a bathroom spray. It can also be used to clean and disinfect doorknobs and door handles.
To apply sweet orange oil topically, dilute it with a carrier oil to a maximum of 2% dilution for adults and 1% for children and elders. For 2% dilution, add 2 drops of essential oil in a teaspoon. Follow our dilution guidelines for more details. Use sweet orange oil topically on swollen areas or sore muscles to reduce inflammation, and rub gently. You can use this method to relieve muscle cramps by massaging this diluted orange oil on your abdomen.
You can inhale sweet orange oil to get its therapeutic benefits. Inhale the oil directly from bottle or add 2 drops of sweet orange oil on the palms of the hands, and rub palms together to spread out the oil evenly. Then cup your hands to the nose and breathe in the scent deeply. You can also dab a drop of orange oil onto your wrist or handkerchief and inhale the oil.
The high Vitamin C content of orange essential oil makes it beneficial for fighting acne, reducing wrinkles and age marks, nourishing hair, and removing dark spots.
The antiseptic properties of orange essential oil help to dry oily skin and reduce acne by killing acne-causing bacteria. For oily and acne-prone skin, add 2-3 drops of orange oil to a cup of water and wash your face every night with the mixture before going to bed to prevent acne. Or place a drop of orange oil on a cotton swab and rub this swab over your acne scars and spots as acne treatment.
Melt 1/3 cup each of canned coconut milk and coconut oil together over low heat. Once melted, pour the mixture into a tight-lidded bottle. Then add a cup of liquid castile soap to it. Shake the bottle well to blend them well. Finally, add 20 drops of orange essential oil and 30 drops of lavender essential oil into the bottle, and shake again to mix all the ingredients well.
As this homemade shampoo isn’t as thick as regular commercial shampoos, pour out a little bit of this shampoo from the bottle directly onto your hair, and then rinse well after washing your hair.
Simply mix 4 drops of olive oil or almond oil with a drop of orange essential oil, and then apply this mixture on your face with a cotton ball or a cotton pad. Leave it on your skin for 5 minutes, then wipe it off your face. You can also use this blend to cleanse your face and remove dirt after you’ve had a long, tiring day.
Mix 1/3 cup each of apple cider vinegar and rubbing alcohol, 3 drops each of sweet orange and grapefruit oils, and 7 drops of lemon oil. Blend all ingredients well. Transfer the mixture to a small bottle or container.
To remove nail polish, soak a cotton ball in the mixture and rub it on your painted nails. Then use soap and warm water to wash your hands, and apply coconut oil or a hand moisturizer on your nails and hands.

Fill a small pan with ¼ cup warm distilled water and place the pan over low heat. Keep a heat-safe jar in the pan, and add 2 tablespoons of shea butter in the jar. Once the butter is melted, add a tablespoon each of coconut, jojoba, and almond oils, and blend them well with a hand mixer.
After pouring this mixture into a medium-sized heat-safe bowl, add a teaspoon of xanthan gum to thicken the blend and let it sit for a minute, and then mix the ingredients together for 1-2 minutes with a hand blender.
Add ¼ cup castile soap and mix well. Next, add 12 drops of orange essential oil and a tablespoon of vegetable glycerin, and blend again until the mixture gets a thick and creamy consistency like a lotion. Pour this gel into a soap dispenser and shake it well before each use. As it contains no preservatives, you must use this shower gel within a few weeks.
To prevent your lips from getting cracked, make your own lip balm at home. For this recipe, mix together equal parts of mango butter and cocoa, and then add a few drops of sweet orange essential oil to this mixture. Store this blend in a small tightly-sealed plastic or tin container which you can carry with you anywhere. Apply this nice-smelling balm gently on your lips to make them smooth.
Get rid of dead skin cells to make skin look younger by creating an exfoliating facial scrub. You’ll need 2 tablespoons of coconut oil, 4 tablespoons of brown sugar, a teaspoon of raw honey, and 6 drops each of the essential oils of orange and tea tree. Add all the ingredients in a small jar and blend them together. Transfer this mixture to a tight-lidded jar and store it in a cool, dark place.
To use, scoop out a little of this scrub with a spoon. Don’t use your fingers to scoop it out so that no bacteria can enter the jar. While in the shower, rub this exfoliating scrub on your face and neck gently. Leave it on for a few minutes, and then rinse with warm water. Follow this recipe 1-2 times a week to get soft, glowing skin.
If you want to moisturize dry hair, make your own hair conditioner at home. For this recipe, you’ll need a tablespoon each of jojoba oil and Vitamin E oil, 10 drops of orange essential oil, and 2/3 cup coconut oil. Use a hand mixer to blend all the ingredients well until the final product gets a smooth, creamy texture. In the shower, apply a teaspoon of this conditioner along the length of your hair after washing your hair with shampoo. Leave it in your hair for 3-5 minutes, and then rinse it out thoroughly.
Orange essential oil has the ability to reduce high blood pressure, induce sleep, lower anxiety, reduce headache pain, protect teeth and gums, and so on. Here are some easy recipes to follow if you want to get orange oil health benefits.
The anti-inflammatory properties of orange essential oil makes it one of the best essential oils for arthritis treatment. Simply dilute 2-3 drops of orange essential oil with a teaspoon of almond oil or avocado oil or coconut oil. Rub the blend on the joints, the back of your hand, or any body parts where you have arthritic pain. This will reduce joint inflammation pain to a great extent.
Avoid rubbing this mixture too close to your eyes.
Fill a small bowl with cold water, and add 1-2 drops of orange essential oil to it. Dip a piece of cloth in the bowl of water and wring it to squeeze out excess water. Then place the wet cloth across the forehead and relax for headache relief.
As an alternative recipe, add a drop of peppermint essential oil and 2 drops of orange oil to a teaspoon of carrier oil like olive oil. Rub the mixture on the shoulders and the back of the neck to soothe headaches.
To alleviate feelings of stress, anxiety, and depression, add 6 drops of orange essential oil and 2 drops of lavender essential oil to 4 tablespoons of carrier oil. While choosing a carrier oil for this recipe, use a neutral oil like fractionated coconut oil or jojoba oil, so that it remains a liquid at room temperature and balances the powerful aroma of orange essential oil well. To use, massage this mixture all over your body for stress-relieving benefits.
Edema or swelling may affect your feet, legs, ankles, and hands more than the rest of your body. To treat edema on your feet or ankles, prepare a foot bath with orange essential oil.
In a large basin, pour enough warm water to submerge your feet. Next, add 15 drops of orange essential oil and 2 tablespoons of sea salt to the water and stir this mixture well to combine. Place your feet in the water and wait for 30 minutes. The swelling on your feet will start reducing after some minutes.
Alternatively, mix 10 drops of sweet orange essential oil with 3 tablespoons of warm sesame seed oil, and rub your swollen feet or ankles with this mixture. Continue to massage the blend until your feet absorb the oils.
For treating facial swelling, you’ll need a cup of warm water, 5 drops of orange essential oil, and a teaspoon of sea salt. Stir all the ingredients together. To use, dip cotton balls into this blend and slowly dab your cheeks and the part under your eyes with these balls to reduce facial edema.
Combine 3-5 drops of sweet orange essential oil with 1-2 teaspoons of carrier oil like coconut oil or olive oil, and massage lower abdomen and stomach area with this mixture. You can also place a drop of diluted sweet orange essential oil between your thumb and index finger, behind your ears, on your wrist, and on other pressure points to improve digestion. This will increase the secretion of digestive enzymes.
Orange essential oil can help to combat bad breath, mouth ulcers, gingivitis, and to control gum infections. Simply add 5 drops of orange oil and ½ teaspoon salt to a cup of warm water. Mix the ingredients together, and then swish it around inside your mouth for a minute or two. Gargle for about 30 seconds, and spit it out. Don’t swallow this mixture.
Oil pulling is an Ayurvedic method of improving dental health. For preventing bad breath and tooth decay, try oil pulling with orange essential oil and coconut oil. Mix a tablespoon of coconut oil with 3 drops of a combination of wild orange, peppermint, and lemon essential oils. After taking 1-2 tablespoons of this mixture into your mouth, swish it around inside your mouth for at least around 20 minutes before spitting it out.
Don’t swallow any of this mixture. Make sure to swish the essential oil blend gently and slowly, so as not to tire out your mouth. After you spit it out, rinse your mouth with warm salt water. Follow this recipe every morning on an empty stomach before brushing your teeth. You can also try this recipe of oil pulling for teeth whitening.
Get relief from seasonal allergies like sneezing and nasal and sinus congestion with the help of orange oil. Take a sniff of orange essential oil directly from the bottle whenever you feel tingling in the nose. Or apply a drop of orange essential oil in each of your nostrils if you don’t have any negative reactions to the strong aroma of the oil. You can also add a few drops of orange oil to a cotton ball and inhale the sweet fragrance for common cold relief.
After lemon essential oil, orange oil is the second most popular essential oil used for household cleaning.
Make dishwashing detergent at home with environmentally-friendly ingredients. You’ll need 3¼ cups of purified water, an ounce of citric acid powder, 2 ounces of washing soda, a cup of kosher salt, 4 ounces of white vinegar, and 20 drops each of wild orange and lemon essential oils.
Combine all these ingredients well in a medium-sized bowl. Store this detergent in refrigerator. Use 1½ to 2 tablespoons of this homemade detergent per load of dishes in the dispenser. Don’t forget to clean the dishwasher regularly for best results. Keep the detergent away from pets and children. Stop using it if you notice any discomfort.
To make the air around your house smell fresh and nice, create your own air freshener by mixing 10 drops of orange essential oil with ¾ cup of water and 2 tablespoons of rubbing alcohol, real vanilla extract, or vodka in a glass spray bottle. Spray this mixture to kill bacteria and germs in the air and get soothing aroma.
Prepare tub scrub with all-natural ingredients. For this, you’ll need a cup of baking soda, a tablespoon of hydrogen peroxide, 10-15 drops of orange essential oil, and ¼ cup castile soap. Mix all these ingredients together and scrub your bathtub clean with this mixture.
Fill up a 16-oz glass spray bottle with distilled water. Then add a few drops of orange oil and bergamot essential oil in the bottle, and give it a good shake. Spray this solution in every nook and cranny of your house to naturally repel ants, mosquitoes, bugs, ticks, and other insects. Spray on houseplants to keep pests at bay.
When applied topically, orange oil side effects may include redness and swelling for some individuals. Perform a skin patch test on a small part of your skin, like your wrists or forearms, before you decide to use orange essential oil on larger skin areas like your face.
Citrus oil including sweet orange oil can have photo-toxic effect. Hence, it should not be applied before going out into sunlight for prolonged periods.
