Known as ‘liquid gold’ in ancient times, frankincense oil or olibanum is one of the most common essential oils used by beginners in aromatherapy. Read on to learn how to use frankincense oil for skin, hair, general health, and home care.
Frankincense oil is extracted from the resin of Boswellia tree, which is native to Red Sea region, India and Somalia. Some of the main species are Boswellia sacra, Boswellia carterii, Boswellia frereana, Boswellia serrata (Indian frankincense) and Boswellia papyrifera.
Add 2-3 drops of frankincense oil to an essential oil diffuser or vaporizer. This is a good way of spreading the mist in the air around the house or office. The sweet, woody aroma of frankincense oil will help in experiencing relaxation and calmness throughout the day.
Pour a few drops of frankincense essential oil in a spray bottle and fill the rest of the bottle with water. Spray this solution into the air to naturally deodorize the room or get the therapeutic benefits of the oil.

One of the best essential oils for skin care, frankincense oil helps in reducing wrinkles, acne, and age spots. In addition, frankincense oil also helps in fighting oral infection and help nourish the hair. Here are some essential oil recipes for skin care that use frankincense oil for acne scars, eyes, and stretch marks.
Mix 3 tablespoons each of honey and lemon juice, 2 tablespoons of almond oil or olive oil, 6-8 drops of helichrysum essential oil, and 8-10 drops each of frankincense and tea tree essential oils.
Mix all the ingredients together in a jar. Apply this face mask and leave it on for 10-15 minutes, then wash it off thoroughly. Try it once a day for around 8-10 days for the results. In case you experience any discomfort, stop using it.
Reduce wrinkles around the eyes using a DIY eye cream. Add 10 drops of frankincense oil, ½ teaspoon Vitamin E, and an ounce each of shea butter, aloe vera gel, and coconut oil. Whisk all the ingredients together in a small bowl. If the coconut oil is solid, heat the shea butter and coconut oil gently in a pan, then add in the rest of the ingredients and blend it all well.
Keep this eye cream in a glass jar and use it twice a day around your eyes, once in the morning and once at night before bed.
This homemade face serum will brighten the skin and improve skin elasticity. Mix a teaspoon each of Vitamin C powder and purified water in a bowl. Add 1½ tablespoons of aloe vera gel and blend well. Pour 5 drops of frankincense essential oil and ⅛ teaspoon of Vitamin E oil into the bowl and blend all the ingredients.
Keep the serum away from bright light and store in a small dark amber bottle. Apply a small amount of this face serum every alternative night so that your skin doesn’t show any negative reaction and adapts to it. Make sure to remove the serum in the morning by cleansing the skin as it can lead to skin irritation when exposed to the sun. Don’t wear sunscreen and makeup before removing the serum. You may start noticing results within a few weeks or after 3 months, depending on your skin type.
To make body butter for reducing scars, melt 2 ounces of shea butter or coconut oil in a double boiler until it’s liquefied. Make sure it’s not too hot, and then add in 10 drops each of frankincense and jasmine oil. Stir the ingredients together to combine them so that the resulting body butter is at room temperature or a little warmer.
Keep it in a small glass jar. For best results, smear a small amount of this butter on your scars.
Frankincense essential oil is an important ingredient in most recipes for healing stretch marks. Mix 3 drops each of frankincense, lavender, and sandalwood oils in a small bottle. Add 6 teaspoons of sesame seed oil to this essential oil blend.
Apply a few drops of this mixture regularly on the body parts having stretch marks, for example, your belly, and continue to use it for a few weeks to see results.
Prepare a blend of 5 drops of each of frankincense and cedarwood oils and a tablespoon of coconut oil. Apply this mixture to unwashed hair. Rub it onto the scalp and into your hair and leave it in for about 10 minutes. Then rinse it out with shampoo.
Add 2-3 drops of frankincense essential oil and a teaspoon of baking soda to a cup of water. Rinse your mouth daily twice or thrice a day for better oral health.
You can also add a drop of frankincense oil to your toothpaste and then brush your teeth with it twice a day to prevent bad breath, mouth sores, cavities, and toothaches. Or add 1 drop of frankincense essential oil to your mouthwash, swish it around inside your mouth and then spit it out for keeping your gums healthy.
In the palm of your hand, add 1-2 drops of frankincense oil to about 6-10 drops of organic jojoba oil. Slowly massage this moisturizing mixture onto your face and neck in a circular motion for several minutes. Make sure to cover your whole face, and leave it as it is.

Massage joints or affected areas gently with this mixture twice a day, once in the morning, and again in the evening. Frankincense oil is effective against seasonal allergies like coughing, chest congestion, sneezing, and wheezing. Relieve chest congestion by adding a few drops of frankincense oil to a bowl of hot water and breathing in the vapours. Alternatively, inhale frankincense oil directly from the bottle, or pour 1-2 drops onto your handkerchief. You can also add 5 drops of frankincense oil to your pillow for allergy relief at night.
Create your own calming bath salt by mixing together ½ cup each of real salt and Epsom salt, 1½ cups of Dead Sea salt, 1/8 cup bentonite clay, and 7 drops each of frankincense and lavender essential oils in a glass mixing bowl. Stir the ingredients with a non-metal spoon, as metal can destroy the clay’s healing properties. Transfer this blend to an air-tight glass jar.
To use, add a cup of this bath salt mixture to a hot bath without using soap. Soak for 15-20 minutes to let your body absorb all the nutrients of the bath salt and feel peaceful and relaxed. In a spray bottle, combine 15 drops of frankincense essential oil with ½ cup water. Spray this solution into the air around your house or the office for an instant burst of a fresh aroma.
