There are hundreds of different species of eucalyptus, each producing a slightly different kind of oil. Two of the well-known eucalyptus species are Eucalyptus Globulus and Eucalyptus Radiata. In between the two, oil from radiata is gentler with sweeter and softer aroma and has a gentler approach to sinus and respiratory illness.
Eucalyptus oil is used in aromatherapy for its purifying and invigorating effect. It promotes the feelings of clear breathing and open airways.
One of the best methods to use eucalyptus oil to get relief from respiratory conditions is inhalation. Sinusitis, tonsillitis, laryngitis, and the common cold are upper respiratory tract infections. Eucalyptus oil helps to loosen phlegm and reduce congestion related to cold, flu or bronchitis. Steam inhalation supports the respiratory system and to aid in breathing.
Add a few drops of eucalyptus oil to bowl having steaming water. Cover your head and bowl with a towel. Breathe in deeply. Keep the eyes closed during steam inhalation. Do not use this method for children younger than 7 years old.
Use a few drops of eucalyptus oil in a diffuser or vaporizer as per instructions. This is helpful in disinfecting the air, getting rid of airborne microorganisms, clearing the nasal passage, and reducing mental exhaustion.

Dilute eucalyptus oil with a carrier oil to a maximum of 1-2% dilution for adults and 0.5% for children and elders. For 2% dilution, add 2 drops of essential oil in a teaspoon of carrier oil.

Vicks VapoRub, one of the famous over the counter drugs used for cough and cold, has eucalyptus oil as its active ingredient.
Eucalyptus oil soothes nervous tension and clears the mind. It is known to eliminate or kill microorganisms. It provides relief from heal wounds, cuts, burn, ulcers, and pain, especially joint pains due to its antiseptic properties.
In addition to using only eucalyptus oil for inhalation, using steam or diffuser, and massage, you can also use the following blend to get relief in breathing.
Recipe 1: Create a blend of 15 drops of myrtle oil, 5 drops of each of eucalyptus, thyme, lavender, and niaouli oils. Mix all essential oils well.
Use the blend in steam inhalation. Put a few drops in steaming hot water and breathe in deeply. Alternately, dilute a few drops of the blend in a carrier oil and massage over the chest and back.
Recipe 2: Add 20 drops of each of eucalyptus, blue tansy, hyssop, and frankincense oils to 10 drops of each of lemon and blue yarrow oils in a dark glass bottle. Shake the bottle vigorously to thoroughly blend the essential oils. Allow the blend to synergize for more than 24 hours before using the blend.
Use the blend for steam inhalation or in a diffuser. You can also dilute the blend in a carrier oil and apply on sinus points around the nose and forehead, as well as on the back of your neck.
To make a chest rub, you will require ¼ cup of each of coconut oil and shea butter. In cold seasons, warm them a little before mixing together. You can use a microwave for the purpose.
Now, whip them together using a mixer. Now add 25 drops of eucalyptus oil, 20 drops of peppermint oil, 15 drops of lavender oil, 10 drops of lemon oil and 5 drops of tea tree oil to the mixture. Whip the mixture again to mix all ingredients well. Store it in a well-capped jar and keep it in a cool and dark place.
To use, apply a small amount on the chest and upper and middle back every few hours as required.
Melt ¼ cup of coconut oil and 2 teaspoons of beeswax pastilles using a double boiler. When the mixture is not too hot, add 20 drops of peppermint, and 15 drops of each of eucalyptus and rosemary oils and stir well to mix all ingredients. Pour the chest rub into the glass jar and allow it to sit until firm.
The congestion and inflammation in the bronchial passages make it difficult to breathe and difficult to cough, and the accompanying fatigue is debilitating. Use the following rubs to get relief.
Recipe 1: Mix 12 drops of eucalyptus and 5 drops of each of thyme and peppermint oils together in 30 ml of carrier oil. Mix all ingredients well and rub a small amount on chest and throat 3-4 times per day to get some relief.
Recipe 2: Mix 6 drops of cypress oil, 8 drops of eucalyptus oil, 6 drops of each of lavender and rosemary oils together in 15 ml castor oil. Blend all ingredients together and store in a dark glass bottle.
Make a chest compress by massaging 1⁄2 teaspoon over the chest. Lay a dry cloth on top. Place a heating pad (or fill a hot water bottle with very hot water) on top for 30 minutes. Repeat as needed.
Athlete’s foot is a fungal infection that affects the upper layer of the skin of the foot, especially when it is warm, moist, and irritated. In case you are suffering from an acute condition of an athlete’s foot, keep your feet dry and use the following blend.
Dilute 3 drops of eucalyptus oil with 1 teaspoon of carrier oil. Apply the blend behind the ear, down the throat area to the chest. Repeat the same process with rosemary oil after one minute to fight infection.
In 1 cup of ice water, add 1 drop of eucalyptus and 3 drops of lavender oils to it. Swish around to mix, soak a washcloth and wring until damp. Apply it on the forehead, and reapply the compress once it is warm.
Do not use it for children except under the supervision of a health care provider or registered aromatherapist.
Mix 5 drops of each of frankincense, wild orange, eucalyptus, and cinnamon oils to create a blend. Let the blend synergize for 24 hours before use. Either use it in a diffuser or dilute in a carrier oil to apply and use it as a massage oil.
Eucalyptus oil when used on hair enhances blood circulation and cleansing. Due to its antimicrobial properties, it helps to clear germs on hair follicles and prevent dandruff and lice and help moisturize the itchy and dry scalp.
In a spray bottle, add 30 ml of apricot kernel oil and 1 tablespoon of calendula extract. Now add 10 drops of each of tea tree, lavender, sweet orange, peppermint, and eucalyptus oils. Shake well to mix all the ingredients.
Spray the blend onto dry hair and gently massage into the scalp.
Pour 120 ml of distilled water in a spray bottle. Add 1 drop of eucalyptus oil, 2 drops of geranium oil, 3 drops of peppermint oil to the water and shake to mix the oils into the water.
Spray all over the body after a bath or shower to feel invigorated and refreshed.
In a 250 ml spray bottle, add 30 ml of vodka or pure grain alcohol. Then add 15 drops of each of eucalyptus and lavender oils and 10 drops of spearmint oil to it. Shake well. Now, top off with distilled water. Shake before each use.
In a glass spray bottle, add 240 ml of witch hazel and 60 ml of jojoba oil. Now, add 50 drops of each of citronella, eucalyptus, and lemongrass essential oils to it. Lastly, add 60 ml of distilled water to it. Shake well to combine all the ingredients.
Shake the bottle well before each use.
